Gaming dry spell. Reccomend some good games?

I got every last bit of juice out of Fallout 3 and Oblivion, and now I am looking for something else to keep me going until Skyrim. Any ideas?

Mass Effect Series

S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. Very similar to Fallout 3, I recommend this game highly.

You never mentioned if you were on PS3, Xbox, or PC. The games I recommended above I played on PC. Mass Effect should still be good on console though.

I'll give STALKER a try, since you said it was like Fallout 3, which I loved.

Try Fallout 2 and Fallout. Extremely fun games.

Fallout: New Vegas is an excellent game, I actually started to like it more than FO3.

I bought Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines recently during a Steam sale and it is a lot of fun as well. Very well-written story and interesting game world.

If you like strategy games, Civ5 is one of the best, although it has some small flaws with the AI system IMO.

Absolutely, that is the only way to play this game, just after the witching hour (midnight), when everyone is asleep.

I hope whoever is designing Skyrim's dungeons has played this game.

In my opinion, Fallout 3 is 10x better than new vegas.
Obsidian got really lazy with new vegas, all they did was add a couple of new scripts, and added some iron sight meshes.

(Which were horrible. The Fallout 3 modders created better iron sights than Obsidian did, that's kind of sad)

Other than that, 0 improvement. Obsidian was too lazy to even remove Fallout 3's resources from the files. You can literally find all of Fallout 3's weapons in the NV files. (Except DLC)

If you were to ask me which of these two games broke more new ground, absolutely, without question it is FO3. It was a visionary title and quite unlike any games I had encountered previously. In fact, it was the game that got me back into gaming after around a 20 year hiatus. For example, I only found out about Oblivion after searching around on tesnexus for some FO3 mods.

If you were to ask me which of these two games I enjoyed more and spent more time playing overall, it is Fallout: New Vegas. The lack of originality due to using the FO3 engine doesn't bother me a bit, nor any of the bugs on the release date (which fortunately in my case were just cosmetic stuff like creatures getting stuck in the terrain, etc.) I loved the implementation of different factions and the reputation system.

With Arwen's Realism Tweaks, or even just Harder Hardcore Rates + Expensive Wasteland, you can seriously beef up the hardcore mode so you actually run out of food and water. There are also a couple of great mods to add new radio stations. Other than that, I didn't install any mods.

In fact, I spent nearly the entire game hobbling around with all my limbs crippled, addicted to 5 or 6 different chems and suffering stat penalties from dehydration, starvation, sleep deprivation, deadly rad poisoning. I even died from dehydration several times.

I tried, but I simply can no longer enjoy playing FO3 after playing FNV. All the food and drink items feel like useless junk if you can load up on unlimited weightless stimpaks. The game feels too easy because of stimpaks. Not to mention in FNV I had a reason to get excited about finding a salisbury steak, or some irradiated water, and the added layer of gameplay involving the various faction communities and organizations is huge for me.

Also one great bonus of FNV is no metro stations. So far I haven't used fast travel when playing FNV, but with FO3, it is really boring and time consuming to navigate all the metro stations you have previously cleared, just to get to the other side. Sometimes when playing FO3 i'm tempted to try disabling clipping and just walking past all the areas with the metro stations.

Fallout 3 wanderers edition fixes all of the listed problems above. And I found the metro stations to really add to the city and create a more spooky atmosphere. In Fallout 3, it really felt like a wasteland. Hope was gone, people were suffering, etc. In New Vegas, everyone just seems bored.

I understand where you're coming from and I do agree about the differences in tone to an extent - it felt like New Vegas was almost a little too civilized, especially in the areas where people were getting back to larger scale farms, etc.

I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction as well and I would say the world of Fallout: New Vegas is at a different part of the spectrum from FO3, where civilization is starting to take root again.

Personally, I didn't enjoy the Mothership Zeta or the Enclave areas in FO3 as much as the gritty Raider and Slaver camps populated by strung out junkies with baseball bats and shotguns, for the same reason. I find the darker side of humanity in the wake of a complete collapse of civilization a fascinating story element.

I'll definitely have to try the Fallout 3 Wanderer mod.

I certainly hope FO4 isn't set in, for example, a completely civilized area controlled by the NCR, etc., or some kind of futuristic epic war with plasma guns and mechs.

What I did like about New Vegas was the additional layers to the game resulting from the faction and reputation system.

If you try the wanderers edition mod, combined with the iron sights mod, the game blows New Vegas out of the water. The iron sights are actually decent in the mod, unlike in Vegas.

IMO, Company of Heroes>Civ 5

Although COH focuses on combat while Civ 5 is more resource management, I think COH is a better game overall.

You should give it a shot, it is the highest rated RTS game of all time.
